AgriLife Extension demonstrates the latest technology and best practices to improve the state’s food and fiber system, which serves all Texas consumers and contributes nine percent of the gross domestic product. Texas 4-H, our primary youth program, engages some 600,000 youth every year in learning projects, leadership development, and community service.

Collaborative programs enable extension educators and their partners to extend resources and prevent duplication of services. In total, extension personnel and extension-trained volunteers achieved nearly 23 million direct teaching contacts, including distance education via the Web, in fiscal year 2015.

Vision:

  • Help Texans better their lives

Mission:

  • Through the application of science-based knowledge, we create high-quality, relevant continuing education that encourages lasting and effective change

Capabilities:

  • We provide programs, tools, and resources —local and statewide — that teach people how to improve agriculture and food production, advance health practices, protect the environment, strengthen our communities, and enrich youth.

This group works to develop and maintain relationships with AgriLife faculty, partnering institutions, companies, and funding agencies to achieve the best fit between funding opportunities and researcher goals.

The CERS office works closely with AgriLife’s Contract Office, Intellectual Property and Commercialization as well as Texas A&M Sponsored Research Services (SRS) to smoothly facilitate tasks that are required in securing research dollars. Projects that are outside of the typical parameters of what CERS can help with should work directly with the AgriLife Contract Office (corporate funding) or SRS (competitive funding). If you aren’t sure, contact one of us in the CERS office and we can point you in the right direction.

Sustainability

As our population grows, increased demand is placed on our land, food supply, and already decreasing water supply. That is why Texas A&M AgriLife emphasizes sustainability in our efforts and developing new sustainable processes. We believe sustainability is a simple fact of good stewardship of resources. To develop a sustainable system, it must increase output to optimize the utilization of resources.

Research Impacts

  • Stephenville center researchers developed strategies to increase waste management efficiency by 45% through on-dairy phosphorus recycling, which saves dairy producers $900 in a land purchase or lease costs.
  • Scientists discovered that conservation practices in streams of the Upper Mississippi River reduce sediment loads by 31%.
  • Efforts are underway at the Uvalde center to launch a statewide initiative on reusing gray water for irrigating urban areas with the goal of generation water saving of at least 8%.

Current Projects & Selected Accomplishments

Grazing management techniques for sustainability of forage resources

Dr. Monte Rouquette has identified peak stocking rates and strategies to optimize sustainable land-use, so that field grazing beef cattle increase weight. There is a correlation between soil nutrient status and stocking rates and fertility regimens.

By cycling nutrients to pastures:

  • forage can be grown without nitrogen fertilizer
  • reduces the need for fossil fuels to make fertilizer
  • enhances the production of natural forage-fed beef

Sustainability of ornamental plants

Brent Pemberton studies the sustainability of ornamental plants in the Eastern region of Texas. Specifically, Pemberton develops roses adapted for heat tolerance and disease resistance. The best-adapted ones are called Texas Superstars®. These roses can serve as landscape plants that reduce the need for pesticides and have reliable ornamental value for home and commercial landscapes.

Water efficiency in the green industry

A new initiative at the Uvalde Center is focused on identifying native and adapted plant species with low water requirements. These plant species have great potential for commercial use in sustainable urban landscapes, rangeland restoration and reclamation, forage production, and improved food and shelter for wildlife. Drs. Xuejun Dong and Vjiay Joshi are also researching the potential to use cold-tolerant spineless cactus as a drought-reserve forage for the livestock industry in more northern areas of Texas.

New treatment method removes heavy metal contaminants generated by electric power plants

A new treatment method – known as the Hybrid Zero-Valent Iron treatment – was developed to remove more than 95% of heavy metal contaminants generated by electric power plants. Evoqua Water Technology and AgriLife Research have an exclusive license agreement and a research and development agreement to continue growing this technology in the future.

Soil health in Texas Southern High Plains

Continuous tillage, monocultural cropping systems, and an ever-increasing demand on water has impacted soil health in Texas Southern Plains. AgriLife Researchers developed a three-year cropping systems study on the impacts of soil health-promoting practices on soil carbon, soil water holding capacity, nutrition availability, and yield and production economics. Demonstrations are currently ongoing.

Insect-Vectored Diseases

Media coverage of insect-vectored diseases such as West Nile virus and Zika virus have Texas on alert lately. Texas A&M AgriLife strives to meet the needs of Texans by providing evidence-based information about these disease, and also providing solutions to these diseases. Solutions include novel disease treatment, vaccines development, and management practices.

The TickApp, developed through the Department of Entomology, greatly reduces the cost of diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease. Each case of Lyme disease costs $100,00 to diagnose and treat.

Stephenville center researchers developed and published a rapid genotyping method for identifying strains of bacterium that cause Pierce’s disease in grapevines and other perennial plants. This method will help entomologists better understand the impacts of insect vectors on disease epidemiology.

Genetic testing by Uvalde scientists shows that a deer cannot transmit tick fever to cattle. This discovery saves the Texas deer hunting industry $2 billion.

Lyme Disease – there’s an app for that

Researchers in the Department of Entomology developed a mobile phone app – The TickApp – to identify ticks as vectors of Lyme disease. This greatly reduces the cost of diagnosis and treatment. Each case of Lyme disease costs $100,00 to diagnose and treat.

Drug discovery for malaria

James Sacchettini’s research in drug discovery aims to understand how enzymes interact with their substrates. This information can be used to combat diseases such as malaria. Sacchettini’s approach is to attack the problem at its core – by identifying the protein or enzyme – that is critical to the life cycle of the organism that causes the disease. He uses this same method of research for tuberculosis.

West Nile Virus in Urban Settings

Gabriel Hamer studies how West Nile virus reemerges in urban settings in a predictable cycle – through a mosquito-bird transmission. As the virus amplifies in bird and mosquitoes, it spills over to humans. Hamer studies ecological processes that spark transmission, and landscape characteristics, including field studies of birds and mosquitoes. This research has potential to improve both human public health and wildlife conservation.

Tick and host interaction

Gabriel Hamer, in collaboration with Sarah Hamer of Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, study tick-host interaction. Part of this research is to identify vertebrate hosts that feed ticks and allow populations to thrive. The research team is developing a novel approach to study North American tick-host interactions based on stable isotopes in host blood that are retained in the tick. This approach will compliment DNA based approaches for the tick blood meal ID (RT-PCR) to determine pathogen maintenance that can be targeted in disease control strategies. Ultimately this work can reduce human and animal disease risk.

Chagas Kissing Bug Disease

Gabriel Hamer is working on several projects about Chagas Disease – the kissing bug. His projects are aimed at understanding the agent of Chagas disease – Trypanosoma cruzi. Hamer will characterize kissing bug activity patterns, species distribution, host association, and parasite infection. The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Entomology have a collaborative Citizen Science Program to learn about kissing bug and Chagas disease risk in Texas. Through the Citizen Science Program anyone can contribute to a real-time map of the state to show interactions with and photos of the kissing bug.
