The Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory offers a wide range of state-of-the-art diagnostic tests for hundreds of species, including cattle, equine, dogs, cats and wildlife. Fumonisin B1 is the most prevalent of several fumonisin mycotoxins produced by Fusarium molds in corn. Horses and other equids, as well as rabbits are the most fumonisin-sensitive species. Consumption of corn contaminated with fumonisin B1 causes 'moldy corn poisoning', which translates to softening of the brain's white matter. Onset of clinical signs depends on the dose of toxin ingested.  2 pages
